VITA tax prep volunteers offer in-person services to the community.

Vita Tax Preparation services will be offered at the Wilson Branch every Tuesday from 4:30-7:30pm and Saturday from 1-4pm. Masks are encouraged and social distancing is required. Appointments are booked one week in advance every Tuesday at 6pm, starting on Tuesday, January 24th for appointments on Tuesday, January 31st and Saturday, February 4th on a first-come-first-served basis. Sign-up can be done by stopping by the Wilson Library or by calling us at (203)946-2228. Priority will be given to those without access to technology at home. No call, no show appointments will not be rescheduled.

Everyone seeking assistance must bring last year’s tax return for new patrons, government issued ID and Social Security Card for everyone on the tax return. Did you have health insurance, and did you purchase it through the Access Health? If yes, please bring 1095A form.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a program sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that works with Connecticut Association for Human Services (CAHS) and The New Haven Free Public Library to provide free tax preparation services to help low income taxpayers receive their tax refunds at no cost to them. The target population for VITA are individuals who qualify for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). For a family of four to qualify for the federal EITC, they must earn under $60,000 annually.

About the branch

The Courtland S. Wilson Library opened in 2006. With the largest footprint among the NHFPL branches, Wilson is a beacon of opportunity and life-long learning in the Hill neighboorhood. Wilson supports literacy with monthly bulk book delivery to school teachers. A youth Lego club, and a newly formed tween and teen computer group meet weekly; and launching in 2019, a youth Girls Who Code Club. Many community groups convene in Wilson’s seven meeting rooms. The Computer Lab hosts groups and offers computer instruction including digital literacy classes in Spanish and weekly free tax preparation during tax season.
