Brenna Burns Yu will read from her book, Hazel & Twig: The Lost Egg, followed by an art activity based on the book’s theme of natural history illustration and observing from nature.
Mouse sisters Hazel and Twig have found a lost egg. At first they want to bring the egg home to hatch it, but when Hazel realizes that the egg may have a home of its own, they search the meadow for its nest. Hazel observes details of the eggs and nests they encounter, such as size, pattern, and color. After reading the story, we will talk about the signs of spring we observe around us right now. Then we will observe and draw from seasonal nature objects, such as flowers, twigs, and a bird’s egg. Participants may bring in their own signs of spring to use as drawing models. Children will have the option to collect their drawings into their own field guides. Imaginary and non-traditional themes for field guides are welcome, too!
