Alma’s Rainbow is about the life of teenager Rainbow Gold as she enters womanhood and navigates standards of beauty, self-image, and the rights women have over their bodies.
Emmy and NCAAP nominated director Ayoka Chenzira gained her interest in storytelling listening to women converse in her mother’s Philadelphia beauty parlor. She is one of the first African American women to write, produce and direct a 35mm feature film, Alma’s Rainbow, which was recently restored by the Academy Film Archive, The Film Foundation, and Milestone Films with funding provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation. Chenzira focuses on creating films and media that highlight stories about Black women, specifically concepts related to identity and standard of beauty for Black women. For more on Ayoka Chenzira, view her website here.
Alma's Rainbow has a runtime of 1h 25 min and is not rated.
